UPMC transplant pioneer Thomas Starzl has received the National Institute of Medicine's 2009 Gustav O. Lienhard Award for "outstanding national achievement in improving personal health care services in the United States."

Thomas E. Starzl, M.D., Ph.D., Distinguished Service Professor of Surgery, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and director emeritus, Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute, was presented with the 2009 Gustav O. Lienhard Award at the Institute of Medicine’s Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 12. Known as “the father of transplantation,” Dr. Starzl was selected for his role in pioneering and advancing transplantation science.

Each year, the award is presented to an individual to recognize his or her outstanding achievement in improving health care services in the United States.

2008-2009 Annual Report from our Laboratory for Education Technology

The Laboratory for Educational Technology at continues to focus on discovery and development of new, primarily web-based, technologies for teaching and learning.

The attached report highlights the Lab’s key activities for the 2008-09 academic year, most notably a new Virtual Patient simulation authoring system (vpSim) for case-based teaching and assessment and significant expansion and enhancement of core education technology systems such as, our patient encounter log, online curriculum (Navigator), collaborative learning portfolios, student web portal and a new lecture recording system.
