Student Profiles

Xiaoyi Teng, Class of 2011

Rockville Centre, N.Y.

Alma mater: Carnegie Mellon. Studied biology.

Favorite food in Scaife cafeteria
Tomato Florentine soup. They only have it every once in a while but its good. Nice for the wintry weather.

Favorite place in Pittsburgh
Mattress Factory is pretty neat.

Favorite thing about Pitt Med
The people. From the students to the faculty to the local Pittsburghers; hard to find nicer people.

Favorite educational experience at Pitt Med
The first day of my first clinical experience: I was expecting just glorified shadowing and a lot of standing around in my still-starched white coat. But my faculty member, who was a great teacher and mentor, threw me into the fire, giving me a piece of paper and a pen and asking me to go interview the patient by myself. I had been a medical student for just six months, and my head just went blank. I had done standardized patient training before, but I was being asked to interview a real person with real diseases and real problems, and I thought I was going to fail miserably. Turned out to be one of my best learning experiences ever.

Summer plans after MS1
I did eight weeks of research with a faculty member here at Pitt (whom I am still working with) and I traveled to China for a four-week traditional Chinese medicine Internship in-between my research.

Why you chose Pitt Med:
Great city. Great people. Great professors. Great research programs that you can check out beyond the MD/PhD route (PSTP, CSTP).

Favorite movie and superhero
Movie: Hot Fuzz, but it changes yearly. Superhero: Batman.

Favorite food
My dad makes this mean noodle bowl.
