Application Stages

Our one-on-one approach to training future doctors extends to our application process.

We will review your application materials individually, carefully considering not just grades and letters of recommendation, but whether we believe you would thrive, specifically at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine—with its unique curriculum, diverse student body, hospital partnerships, wealth of research opportunities for students, and setting in one of America’s most livable cities.

Obviously, if you make it to the interview stage, we will get to know one another even better. At each step of the application process, we will treat you as a potential peer.

The most important function of the School of Medicine is the education of future physicians, and candidate selection constitutes a serious responsibility of the faculty. The clear goal is the development of a class of intelligent, well-prepared, diverse, and inquisitive students. Review the details to review the details of the method by which admissions shall be determined.

We have two separate application stages:

Stage 1: AMCAS application

The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPSOM) participates in the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) of the Association of American Medical Colleges. AMCAS provides a centralized system for applying to any participating medical school. The AMCAS Application for Admission, common to all participating medical schools, is available at www.aamc.org.

A waiver form for the AMCAS application fee is included with the material provided by AMCAS. An applicant who is granted an AMCAS waiver will receive an automatic fee waiver from UPSOM for the supplemental application.

Applicants are urged to file their AMCAS applications as early as possible, and certainly before our deadline of October 15th (11:59 PM EST).

Stage 2: Supplemental application

All who apply through AMCAS may complete our Supplemental Application (once we receive the verified AMCAS application).

Look at detailed information and specific requirements for letters of recommendation. Applicants unable to comply with these requirements should contact the school’s Executive Director for the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid in writing. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that we receive all materials, including letters of recommendation, no later than the deadline of November 15th (11:59 PM EST). Extensions are rarely granted.

In addition to the AMCAS application and fee, applicants must submit a non-refundable supplemental application fee of $110. Applicants who have been granted fee assistance by the AAMC will also be granted a fee waiver for the supplemental fee. Participants in Teach for America, AmeriCorps, and the Peace Corps do not automatically qualify for a supplemental fee waiver. Applicants that do not qualify for the AAMC waiver may apply directly to UPSOM for consideration of the supplemental fee waiver and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
